Chernihiv Historical Museum of Vasyl Tarnovsky
Chernihiv Historical Museum named by Vasyl Tarnovsky is one of the oldest and most interesting museums in Ukraine. Locations first opened its doors to visitors in 1902. Today's museum is a result of merging several museums and it currently hosts three separate exhibitions: the Museum of History, National Museum of Decorative Arts and a military-historical museum.
The overall collection includes more than 170 thousand exhibits of major value and significance for Ukraine. The variety and quality of its collection being in the top twenty of the leading museums in the country.
Chernihiv was surrounded on February 24th 2022. A week later, in the midst of artillery firing, smoke and fire, after a mine explosion just nearby, the museum staff took the decision to dismantle the exposition. As a result, more than 5 thousand units floor by floor were carefully packed and moved to a safe place. The military history museum branch suffered the bombings that practically destroyed its premises.
Today, the museum team is working on a new project, for which information is being collected, inventory and delivery of exhibits, which one day will become a new museum that tells about the war with Russia and the heroism of people from Chernihiv.
