Luhansk Theatre of Ukrainian Music and Drama in evacuation
In 2014, the Luhansk Regional Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater was relocated from the occupied city of Luhansk to Severodonetsk, where it reestablished itself and resumed its full-fledged activities. Over the next eight years, the theater successfully restored its cast, repertoire, and technical equipment, releasing over 40 premieres and participating in numerous international projects. The theater also initiated the national Ukrainian Theater Festival "World Overview" and took part in more than 20 national and international festivals and competitions, touring regularly across Ukraine.
However, in June 2022, the theater building was decimated by targeted tank shots fired by the armed forces of the Russian Federation. The premises were utterly destroyed and burned down.
Despite the devastation, the theater team remains undeterred and is currently resuming its work in the city of Sumy, based at the Sumy National Academic Theater of Drama and Musical Comedy named after M. Shchepkina. The determined group of artists and staff hold onto their belief that they can rebuild and restore the Luhansk Regional Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater, preserving its rich cultural legacy for future generations.
